About us

Founded as a branch of The National Institute of Research and Development for Biological Sciences, we are dedicated to research in microorganisms, plant and animal biology. We combine traditional and modern molecular biology methods in studying biodiversity and developing strategies for a sustainable exploitation of resources. This involves studies of ecology, taxonomy, and phylogeny on cyanobacteria, algae, invertebrates, and higher plants. We also conduct research on more applied aspects of life sciences, like energy production using microorganisms, synthesis of biological compounds in culture media, in-vitro multiplication of plant species for repopulation purposes, or production of new maize hybrids. Although not a higher-education institution per se, we also offer undergraduate and graduate students training in our laboratories through close collaborations with “Babeş-Bolyai” University.
